Microalgae have been of major interest for producing biofuels in de last decade. Recently, development and focus was changed towards the use of microalgae in the food, feed, materials and chemical sector as well. During the 7th International Algae Congress in Hamburg, many developments in the agricultural and aqua cultural field will be shown by presentations of the larger projects inside and outside Europe.

Cal State San Marcos researchers unlocked the genome for a type of algae found around the globe, a finding they said has potential applications to fields ranging from climate change to dentistry. The study sequenced 13 strains of the phytoplankton Emiliania huxleyi, to document the first algal “pan-genome:” a set of genes shared by diverse algal varieties. While the different strains share 70 to 80 percent of their DNA, about 20 to 30 percent of their genes are unique to each strain, allowing them to inhabit virtually all the world’s oceans except the polar seas.
Fungi like downy mildew reduce wine yield and impair wine quality. In conventional as well as organic viticulture grape growers usually apply copper for preventing these fungal diseases. In the ProEcoWine project funded by the EU, on behalf of five companies the Fraunhofer IGB, the University of West Hungary and Laboratoire PHENOBIO develop a novel bio-plant protection product derived from microalgae to replace copper fungicides.
Hailed as an industry with immense potential, Australia’s algae sector is expected to grow fervently with local projects spanning from Western Australia to South Australia steering the industry towards more biofuels, pharma and food discoveries.
