KAILUA KONA, Hawaii (September 13, 2012) — Cyanotech Corporation, has completed a long-term loan agreement with Pacific Rim Bank in Honolulu, Hawaii providing for $5,500,000 in aggregate credit facilities. The loan proceeds will be used to finance capital improvements, which include new equipment to be used in the processing of its natural astaxanthin and the addition of new administration and warehouse buildings at its Kona, Hawaii facility. The new equipment includes the purchase of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction equipment for which Cyanotech has signed a purchase agreement with Uhde Corporation of America.
Researchers from The University of Western Australia and Murdoch University have for the first time identified a number of WA sites capable of producing large quantities of commercial biofuel from microalgae. The sites identified across Western Australia’s Mid West and Pilbara regions include stretches of land south of Geraldton, south-east of Exmouth and large areas near Karratha and Port Hedland.
The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the Arizona State University led Algae Testbed Public-Private Partnership (ATP3) for a $15M award for its Advancements in Sustainable Algal Production opportunity.
The joint venture between EXELERIA (Group EVERIS) and BTME, finishes construction and begins operation of the second largest microalgae production facility in Europe in Spain. The Biotechnology Industry Organization’s (BIO) 2012 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy will feature two breakout sessions focusing on commercial applications for algae and advances in algal biomass production and processing. The Summit will bring together industry leaders, university researchers and venture capitalists to facilitate networking and business partnerships this October 9-12 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, Canada.
Charlotte’s first Eco-industrial Park, ReVenture Park, announced an agreement today with Renewed World Energies (RWE) to develop an algae-to-fuel pilot plant with plans to quickly expand into a full commercial scale bio-fuel facility. RWE has been developing a commercially viable system to turn algae into cleaner burning fuel and high-energy feedstock for alternative energy plants. The patent pending systems will be used to create different strains of algae that will be utilized to create everything from transportation fuel to health supplements. The initial facility is expected to be operational Sept. 30th, 2012.
