Einzellige Grünalgen können Raumfahrer auf längeren Missionen mit Nahrung und Sauerstoff versorgen. Dabei müssen die Algen allerdings den besonderen Bedingungen im Weltall standhalten, vor allem der Schwerelosigkeit. Forscher des Bereichs Bioverfahrenstechnik am KIT entwickeln im Rahmen des neuen Projekts ModuLES (Modulares LebensErhaltungsSystem) einen speziellen Reaktor zur Kultivierung von Mikroalgen im Weltraum.
